National Winners in San Diego

Bill Grant, and Ron Kay, San Diego, are national champions – having won the 0-10,000 IMP Pairs at the San Diego Fall North American Bridge Championships. There were three points of interest about this great win:
1. On the last hand of the tournament, Bill put Ron in 3NT which was beatable by Double Dummy, but not so easy in real life. Ron made it and was awarded +8 in the IMP scored pairs. At the time, Bill and Ron were in 2nd place overall; had Ron not made the final contract the pair would have been given -8 or so on the board, a 14+ IMP swing. Their final margin of victory in the event: 12 IMPs.
2. Unbeknownst to Bill and Ron, on that final board they were playing against the at-the-time event leaders, giving their opponents the minus score!
3. And most important, Bill correctly broke a date to play with me in another event that day. Hard to be mad at a winner!
